About the event
The play revolves around the comical escapades of two young men who are resisting their families’ plans to marry them off to unwanted partners.
Scapin helps Octave and Leandre. Octave is in love with a girl called Hyacinthe, but her mother, Argante, is trying to marry her off to someone else. Leandre, meanwhile, is in love with the gypsy Zerbinette, but his father, Géronte, is determined to marry him off to another woman. Scapin devises plans to sort out these complicated relationships through his cunning and scheming. He organises deceptions, forges letters and sets off a series of comical incidents.
In the end, thanks to Scapin’s wit, the young men manage to marry the partners of their choice, thereby thwarting their families’ plans. Whilst the play incorporates elements of classical comedy, it also explores universal themes such as human relationships, family dynamics and intrigue.
