About the event
Physical Theatre Research has come together under the umbrella of the School of Physical Theatre and Comedy. Following a training programme based on the Jacques Lecoq method, the play ‘Under the Castle’ emerged as an experiment blending various styles such as clowning, physical storytelling, mask theatre, buffoonery and grotesque acting.
The text was adapted from William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth and brought to the stage in a new version. The Bufons, one of the most original styles of the Lecoq method, formed the fundamental structure of the play. These creatures from the underworld, who exist on stage to disbelieve in everything and mock everything, produce an absurd, tragic and blood-soaked farce when they encounter Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s most powerful tragedies. For the Bufons, humanity is merely a tool for playing, mocking and imitating. In this sense, the play invites the audience on a provocative, dark, unsettling and highly comical journey. A journey into our own darkness…
